Civatte was a French dermatologist who first described a common weathering change which affects the skin of the sides and front of the neck.

Poikiloderma of Civatte characteristically spares the shaded area under the chin. The skin in the affected skin is red-brown with prominent hair follicles. The term "poikiloderma" refers to a change in the skin where there is thinning, increased pigmentation and dilation of the fine blood vessels (telangiectasia).

Poikiloderma is most frequently seen on the chest or the neck and is commonly associated with sun damage.

Cause of Poikiloderma of Civatte

The exact cause is unknown.

Contributing factors are:

  • Photosensitizing components of cosmetics and toiletries especially perfumes
  • Skin which is fair in color
  • More exposure to sun
  • Various Hormonal factors

Treatments for Poikiloderma of Civatte

We have successfully treated many cases like yours, and a careful IPL is the first step, aside from prevention with regularly using sunscreen, meaning every 4 hours in the sun with an SPF 30.

You may need 4-6 treatments for an even color to emerge. I like IPL, but KTP Laser can also work. The neck is a high risk area to work on, so be careful as burns are common. In the right hands, it can be a safe and effective treatment.
